Winter Whimsy Masquerade (2017)

Post by Terra Fennel » Sat Dec 23, 2017

The mistress of mischief herself had recreated the decorations from the previous dance with love and care. Just as before faint bells and the chiming of crystalline charms greeted those that entered the dance hall. Twinkling lights hidden among glass and icy ornaments along the walls and dangling from the ceiling gave the illusion of an endless expanse of the night sky surrounding the dance floor. Dust imbued into numerous ornaments gave the outer edge of the room a growing chill as students grew closer to the wall discouraging them from breaking the facade. It also encouraged those dancing with one another to stay closer together and those who wouldn't dance to mingle as any wallflowers would wilt in the cold. Never one to hold back, she had ignored the few complaints from those who felt the frigid nature of the dance hall from before had hindered them. Those same individuals she had watched be forced to dance and talk instead of linger on the edges as they had at every other dance.

As more people entered the room, the wolf decided it was time to add her final touch to the celebration. Teal radiance ran along the grooves of the wooden mask that obscured her visage. Freeze dust drew the image of a blooming lotus on the side of her mask as she activated the dust in the ornaments overhead. Shimmering flakes of snow conjured by aura and will danced free from the ornaments only to find their fall ended prematurely as they dissipated mere feet over the students in the hall. The lotus on her mask faded to a dull glow as she looked on from the balcony. A winter dance to remind the students of the warmth that resided in each other had been her idea. Before in her grief she had believed it idealistic and nonsense, but something she wanted to try none the less. Now though, there was a smile behind that mask, golden eyes shining as she watched the crowd. She didn't know if she would come down from the balcony this time either, but the thought was there. For now, she would enjoy watching the students below.

"Oh, hell ya, I'm totally in on this!" Jim said as he looked the flier that had been pinned up in one of the common dorm areas. A dance and masquerade sounded like a lot of fun, plus for once thanks to Ava he had some appropriate clothing for such occasion. The blue-haired guardian, had assisted... or well... downright payed for a suit that was used for the valentine’s day dance, and he could not imagine a better time to take the thing back out. It would be fun to show to the populace that he knew how to dress from time to time, and not just permanently plastered with a t-shirt and shorts.

However, the issue for Jim would be, what to do about a mask? Searching his currently empty dorm he pondered what he could use for this, and only one idea came to him. As his eyes gazed down into his drawer he saw the mask that her used during his vigilantism. "I mean what could possibly go wrong with this? If someone says something about it I can just say that I'm a fan of him and... wait..." Luckily, the typically impulsive guy had a moment of reason cutting off his train of thought, while shaking his head. "Nope... Terrible idea..." He would say out loud as he buried the mask again beneath some shirts. Especially given the fact that he had been exposed the last time out there is no possible way wearing that would turn out well. With a shrug ultimately, Jim just decided to throw on the dark colored suit, and roll the dice that they would have some masks available at the dance for the less artistically inclined such as himself.

Just before departing the room he had a short moment of despair as he wasn't sure what his teammate were up too currently with classes out of session. Though, with a final check over in the mirror, he grinned. "That's cool, just have to meet some new friends." Something he had been meaning to do for a while as it seemed recently he had mostly been hanging out with his little clique of friends. A sadly unintended consequence of having a team.

After a short walk through the gardens Jim found his way to the dining hall. Placing his hand on one of the massive double doors, it was cold to the touch, and he was instantly struck with a little flashback. "Oh no... not again..." As he remembered the time where he and his team stumbled upon this very room covered in a dark and rather creepy rime. Luckily, as he opened the door this time, he was greeted by a wonderful spectacle, that even he could appreciate instead of ominous sheets of ice. "Wow, I'll give it to the dust guys, they went all out this year!" His words were followed by a chuckle as he often exchanged taunts with dust based people, but credit where credit was due.

Also, as Jim entered there were a handful of masks off to the side, on a table. "Nice!" He said while turning to the table. "Hmm... which one, which..." It didn't take him long to to find one that was fitting of him as it was reminiscent of a superhero’s mask. So, donning the mask and with a rather large grin on his face which was still noticeable as the mask only covered from the nose up, Jim was now ready to get the party started!

Taupe tapped her foot as she scrutinized the pair of coat hangers on her bed, each one hanging a drastically different outfit. One was her dress uniform, pressed and starched and kept in perfect condition with mathematical certainty. She reached for the familiar coarse cotton, wanting to feel comfortable at the Winter Whimsy dance. She took a look at the other hanger, a recent addition to her previously spartan wardrobe. It was apparently essential to have in her closet, according to everyone she talked to. She raised the short black dress up to eye level. Before coming to Beacon Taupe would have written it off as too revealing, especially in her condition. She hesitated, eyes flitting back and forth between each one. She groaned and grabbed a hanger before starting to change. It was almost time to get going.

Taupe futilely tried to pull down the black fabric once more, hoping for at least another inch of coverage. Her heels clicked loudly as she walked through the front door into the dance, constantly feeling like her dress wanted to ride up her legs at any moment. It wasn't uncomfortable, but Taupe wasn't used to something this short. The dress was backless, held by a collar strap around her neck. On the bright side, she didn't look too out of place among everyone. Her uniform would have brought far more stares in her direction. Her mask only covered her eyes and flared outward, plain black with gold filigree arcing around like vines. her hair was also done up, held in a large ornamental shape by three long hairpins. She was glad it wasn't any larger thanks to her shorter, shoulder length hair compared to her old back length hair. It seemed to mess up her balance as she moved her head, at least a little.

She squinted behind her mask, hoping to make out any familiar faces. Not yet, I guess. She stood near the edge of the room with a line of sight to the door. Her shoulders prickled from the freezing aura of the dust on the wall, but she didn't mind. She tapped one opera gloved hand against her arm as she waited for people to file into the room.

Annie wasn't necessarily planning on attending to this dance. But, here she is.

The news about the Winter Whimsy Masquerade spread like a forest fire across campus, and it was always a conversational topic back and forth. People were asking other students to the dance to be their date, while others were decorating the hall to make it look astounding. She kept watching girls giggling and planning out what dresses they'd wear; male students were scurrying to pick out suits and ties. It was overall busy around Beacon Academy as this happened, and it made her distracted from her studies. And people should b excited about this event... However, Annie was not.

She could have just stayed in her dorm room and played video games, or could have gone to the districts of Vale to do some late shopping. She could have chosen to buy dust to amplify her weapons, or could have wandered around the gardens of Beacon and relaxed, or meditated. Dances weren't necessarily her preferred terrain, and it's always so crowded and fancy.

However, something made her drawn to it. She wasn't necessarily sure why. She knows she could, or would be overlooked as an outcast. Or worse, get bullied by her peers from her classes. She wasn't sure how to dance, let alone dancing in heels. Though, something tells her tonight would be a good night. Something draws her into believing that this dance would be fun. Would be good for an introvert like her.

And who knows? Maybe she'd turn some heads with her formal attire. And maybe some of the bullies would think twice than to mess with her.

So, here she was. Annie's dyed-turquoise hair was actually wavy from a hair curler, instead of how it's usually so messy and out of the pace on her right side. Her bangs were swept from her face, having a few black bobby pins deep in her skull so they wouldn't block her red-iris vision. Her cheeks flushed with soft freckles across her face, and dusted on her shoulders, and a hint of pink blush was spread. And her lips were glossed by a light shade of peach pink that enhances her lips.

Not only that, her dress looked stunning. In a mermaid gown, the colors of teal and black are spread marvelously in a divine pattern, unlikely of her normal rebellious look. The fabric etched itself with the line and thread work of black, weaving from around her chest to downward and to her hips in waves. The dress curved her body perfectly, and the bottom half has of lace fabric of cooled blue and teal. It dragged ghostly as she walked in, with her hidden wedged heels lightly stomping the dining hall floor. And lastly, her shoulders were revealed, with more freckles and the hint of some scars plastered like an unknown canvas. And she wore a choker in black coating that was hugging her neck, and a small, red stone displayed elegantly.

Annie walked into the dance slowly, trying to maintain balance and holding her posture. She glanced around, then looked at herself. Maybe she overdressed? Maybe she looked too formal? Annie fidgets, her curly bangs brushed away from her face, before she noticed the masks waiting to be used.

She trotted slowly, staring at the table, before her eyes were caught by the lovely half-face masked that would cover the right side of her face with a black and golden sophisticated design. Her soft hands reached over, contemplating on her choice. With a nod, she puts it on, her hair fixed while her mask was carefully placed on her face, half-shown, half-hidden.

Annie gulped, clutching to the small bag she was hanging onto with the handle attached to her wrist.

"Well, now I'm here," she mutters to herself. "Now what?"

Looking around Jim instinctively started to look for some of his close friends. However, given the masks and the unusual attire for most. Then of course, combined with the fact that he was about as unperceptive as they come, he was unable to recognize anyone. Luckily for the extrovert that simply just meant it was time to meet some new people. The question was who though? Most people seemed to be in groups showing up with their friends. Though there were a few outliers, and despite the efforts put towards forcing people to the center of the room, some still gravitated towards the walls all the same. Luckily, or well perhaps unluckily for them, Jim had a knack for engaging such people.

So, tossing his jacket on a nearby chair despite the cold, Jim opted to go up to the one person because why not thats how new friends were made of course. There was a a girl near the edge of the room which he was pretty sure that he had seen before, though he couldn't remember if he ever spoke to her. All the same, seemed like a decent place to start.

"Heya, I'm Jim Lavay!" He almost shouted at the girl in excitement, though his follow words were a little bit quieter as he second guessed this action. "...or wait are we not supposed to say our names because of the masks? Huh, I don't know..." With a shrug he would end up just laughing at himself. "...Regardless, too late now, guess the cats out the bag... Anyway, what your name? I can't tell who anyone is at this dance..." He added that final part as a disclaimer just in case he truly was that oblivious and didn't realize he was talking to someone he knew so well. Though, a more perceptive person also probably would have noticed a person who took up such a position in an uncomfortable place in the room probably wasn't the most open to revealing herself.

Green faded into reality beside the wolf of the rafters, wafting over her as a black cloak appeared silently in the empty space. A sudden weight added to reality where none existed, and a warmth draped over the shoulder of the faunus girl from the arm of a significantly larger intruder unto her little hidden hole. Tight and content, Drake's hold on Terra brought him immediately against her as he shared in her moment of watching the dance below. On his face rested a purple and green Dragon's mask. Beautifully carved and painted to seem as if it's scales shimmered with the colors. Black horns winding up from the top of the mask over his head. Smirking at her as he loomed over the banister without speaking, Drake swirled a milky sweet concoction in his mouth. Pursing his lips, he raised a lighter before his face before spitting some of Terra's sake out into the flame, creating a short burst of fire breath for Terra to see.

Quietly laughing to himself he hugged on her shoulders and rested against the Bannister watching everyone below. "You did a good job on this one. I am proud of you. It's a beautiful party." Turning he kissed the side of her mask and rested his head somewhat on top of hers. "You're mask is beautiful too, and so is mine. I think I could get behind your love of masks with this thing." Truly he adored this mask she had etched into creation for him. It was beautiful, and something he felt fit him perfectly. So maybe her love of masks was a little less "super weird" than he had believed. Either way he would hold her company up here above the party, watching the students below enjoy their celebration planned out by the wonderful woman.
"Boo."

Any thoughts of clearing herself a path to join the crowd were lost when a familiar presence filled her senses. While catching his scent was impossible with her mask, there was always a faint sound of air being pushed aside when he appeared. To most it was no heavier than a page turning in a book. To her, this close, it was as clear as the sudden feeling of his aura taking its place near her. With his arm draping over her shoulder, she nuzzled into his side without a second thought. It was where she belonged and she never stopped to question it anymore. Certainly not after everything they'd been through. He was her dragon, though that didn't prepare her for him living up to his namesake. The spray of alcohol, a familiar scent, was quickly consumed and became a short lived breath of fire, and a show meant just for her, even if all those below could see it. A gasp and a giggle followed the short light show.

Her hands rested on the banister as her eyes readjusted to the darkened room and took in the crowd yet again. A few masked faces had turned upwards for a moment, but they weren't important. The twinkling crystals giving off a fading snow weren't important. The crowd would be forgotten if they weren't under her gaze. "I'm glad it turned out how you wanted. I spent a lot of time on that one for you." With him here, everything seemed to have fallen in place. A wonderfully comfortable feeling settled on her shoulders and she was more at peace standing above the maddening crowd than she could have ever imagined last time. "Thank you for coming." It was nice to not be alone.

The masked musician of Vacuo was one of few people that came in it seemed as the party seemed to just get started. Chroma wasn't one for formal events -let alone formal parties, but oh boy did he love parties. He didn't really have anything formal to wear, so he went in his next best thing: his casual clothes with a clip on tie. the snake like piece of fabric was simply... red. Yes red, solid red in fact -one could really call it a crimson shade at this point as it clashed with the lavender shading of his hoodie. He never really understood why people wanted formality at parties, it just seemed... off to him. To him in Vacuo a party was something for a club, something that needed a great sense of music. Sadly he couldn't provide his music, but he could provide his presence, which was always great!

"Was the tie even worth it... Of course it was, can't really go somewhere formal without one..." His thoughts were pretty back and forth when it came to this. "Then again when have I ever been formal...." The masked musician mused to himself with a chuckle as the doors opened and he entered with a half confident, half lazy stride. He didn't know much of masquerades, well except for the mask part -and the party part as well, though that was already known.

Chroma's regular mask wasn't much when it came to masks that others wore here, his was more... mechanical compared to other people's more natural and even more elegant designs. The second part was always lost to him as he looked about the floors. Other people got here before him by the looks of things, his led mask shifting between the more neutral white to a sort of red -and then a nice little golden glow. He didn't have a reason for the lights to shift, but he wanted it to fit the general look of the place, to which he thought he did perfectly.

Sadly when it came to parties, he didn't know how to really enjoy a party much -let alone a masquerade where it was so... well formal. Normally this where he'd have had a stage to be, or even something to take a drink of. Instead of staying with the crowd, he moved off to the side with other people, looking about for an opportunity at a conversation as various emotes shifted about periodically. It seemed that even the party man didn't know what to do here alone like this. But if one did approach, they would have found him trying to adjust his tie, growing rather irritated with the formal implement.

His irritation grew at a sizable rate, finding it to be wrong no matter how he put it. He took off the tie, pocketing it as he found himself to be rather annoyed before he set off into the crowd, hoping to at least bump into someone. He muttered something as we wandered the crowd though, not a word less than he normally dealt "Raggin' fraggin tie..."

Taupe temporarily gawked at Jim, blindsided by the person that had just come up to talk to her. It took her a moment to recover and process what he was saying. She had expected only to really see her friends at the dance, maybe Blackwall if he eventually showed up. But she looked at the stranger and simply laughed quietly into a satin fist, slightly bemused. "I'm sure you'll be able to tell who your friends are here, Jim." She replied, taunting him with the sound of his name. Lavay? That's that huntsman's last name, right? And Ivory's too if I recall correctly. She recollected, saving it to ask Jim about later. She decided to have some fun with Jim for a bit, at least until someone she recognized arrived. "As you said, it's a masquerade party. I might tell you my name... if you dance with me for a bit. I was hoping to meet with someone here, but they're not here yet, so.." She daintily held out a hand for him to take.

There was a glimmer in Shana's eyes the evening of the masquerade. The Atlesian resented that fact she had missed the Valentine’s day dance a resentment compounded by the fact that her teammate had helped to arrange it. Team allegiances aside it just didn't feel right to attend that dance single. A masquerade though? This was the perfect opportunity for the medic to enjoy a well-deserved evening off and wash the bitter taste of the last party she attended out.

The archangel broke her usual mold of wearing her military dress for something much more flattering. A long ankle length golden dress with a backless halter top that was far more revealing then the medic was accustom too. The dress was accented by her golden bracers, a thin golden necklace with an Atlesian pendant, and finally her mask of choice. A golden face from an ancient statue. Shana finished it all off by styling her long blonde hair to show off some classic waves. Looking in the mirror the military girl couldn't help herself as she felt like a princess from children's movie.

The chill of the dining hall was a bit of an unwelcome host for the strange Atlesian who didn't care the cold. Rubbing her arms for a few seconds the medic worked up the courage to enter and she was quickly taken in by the display. Her eyes wandered about looking at both the decorations and the people until she found a familiar muscle-bound bruiser that was recognizable even while hiding in his formal wear.

A smirk danced across the Archangel's face as she walked over to the boy who was currently chatting it up with another student. Shana placed a hand on his shoulder to make herself know. "Hello." The medic said with a warm giggle. "Who's your friend?"
