A Lesson About CQC [Private - Jim Lavay]

Back of the school is a large garden surrounded by hedges and a large pond with open paths. This area of the school is for you to chat with other characters casually, discuss your school work, practice your technique without fear of running into creatures of Grimm, and to meet new people.

A Lesson About CQC [Private - Jim Lavay]

Post by Maria Ravenheart » Mon May 14, 2018

“Left fist. Duck. Right jab. Left uppercut.” The scarlette chanted, using the momentum from her attack to spin around and followed up with a swift kick. Her leg connected with the red target on the Beowolf hologram’s chin, giving off a ringing chime. Quickly rotated her body back to face the target, Maria ducked back just in time to avoid a quick swiped aimed for her face. Using both her hands to catch herself before falling to her back, the red-haired huntress flipped backward, creating some distance between herself and the Beowolf.

“94 percent accuracy, 6 hits in 12 seconds…” Maria read off the result shown over the hologram. Letting out a long exhale, she struck her fighting pose once again, her right hand raised just above her face while her dominant left positioned on her chest level. Left foot stepped back, supported and balanced her pose as the girl reset the training sequence, and waited for the Beowolf to charged forward and attack. The projection has been programmed to act as accurate as the real thing in case she has to face them without her weapon in hand. Ever since Maria broke her blade during the Team trial after fighting off a massive Boarbatusk, the scarlette has been taking extra precautions to make sure she’s still capable of dishing back some damage even without her weapons.

The Beowolf hologram started with a wide swing with its paw. The redhead simply duck under the attack and retaliate with her own. Pushing herself off the ground, she connected her fist with the target under the Beowolf’s snout, the ringing chime resonated in her ears. Her balled fist released, letting the hair clip inside her palm loose into the air. In the next instance, Maria blinked above the Beowolf, letting momentum carried her body in a spinning cyclone. A swift back roundhouse followed up with a heavy elbow strike connected with the Beowolf’s neck and the back of its head. Despite missing the target at the nape, her power behind the elbow strike well make up for it, floored the hologram projection on the arena. The girl braced the landing all four, quickly tumbled away to avoid any retaliation strike from the Grimm creature. The sequence ended with a much less desirable outcome displayed over the projection with only 74 percent accuracy. “Tch…” Maria sigh, picking up the scroll she set on the ground and turned off training mode. Sitting back on a bench, Maria took a sip from her water bottle, pouring some more over her crimson hair to cooled herself off. Recalled back to the previous training, Maria re-evaluated herself, seeing if there’s anything she could improve

---A week ago---

The clock just hit half past six when Maria had finished her preperation. The arena wasn’t usually this empty, but most people prefer not to start their training so early in the morning, as well as the fact people don’t wake up so early on the weekends. Until more students show up, she got the whole arena to herself. Maria wore a simple cropped tight fit white sport tank top, crossing an X behind her back, reaching down just above her stomach, a layer of bandage wrapped underneath the shirt. Below the waist, she wore a plain dark-grey short with matching color knee sleeves. Finally, a pair of specialized sport boots, much shorter than her combat attire. Usually, Maria wouldn’t wear these anywhere else beside the gyms, this special occasions where nobody is around give her the perfect chance to dawn the workout outfit and practice hand to hand combat.

Her scrolls has already been set on the opposite side of the arena, projecting a hologram of a Beowolf. While not too big in size, the projection did a good job representing a real Beowolf, from its appearance to its action. There’re a few moving targets on its body, locating the weak points for the huntress. Striking the pose, her right hand raised above her head while her left foot stepped back, Maria started the simulation. Almost simultaneously, the two rushed toward each other. Duck under the first swing from the Grimm creature, its claw bare missed her head, caught a few strands of hair. Lower her center balance, Maria threw a swift but powerful kick, aimed at a red target between the chin and neck. The heels of her feet connected with the point, a loud chime rang in her ear. Quickly rolled out of the way to duck a second incoming strike, Maria got up and lunged forward, throwing a quick left hook to underneath the Beowolf’s arm. She dashed toward the other side before the creature could react, following up with another two strike to the underbelly. Each hit connecting with the targets on the hologram let out another ringing chime.

Flipping backward to avoid a retaliation attack, Maria blinked back to a hair clip she had planted beforehand just behind the Beowolf. The scarlette climbed up the Beowolf’s back, winding up a few strong punches to the back of the neck before jumping off and tumbled away. Looking back at the hologram, the result appeared over the creature’s head. “94 percent accuracy. 8 hits over 12 seconds.” Maria quietly read over the result. Not too bad for her first attempt.

~~~~~Last Week~~~~~
There wasn't really much of a rhyme or reason to when Jim went to the training facility. Sure, it was nice to get in before it got crowded. However, during thing time, he would also frequently run into friends. Also, a good chunk of the mornings he was also usually nursing some kind of injury from the day before. That all said on this particular day the veteran student was 100% healthy and he wanted to get his blood pumping early. Aside from running head long into a large pack of Grimm there was no other way to accomplish this task then to his up the training area.
So, after a quick trip shower Jim found his way into the room. He was dressed in his standard work out wear which consisted of athletic shorts, a plain t-shirt, and shoes. What the outfit lacked in own appeared was made up for by the large muscles that were revealed beneath. By the time he arrived at the gym the sun had just barely started to peer in from the windows and there was only one other person in the whole place. A girl with crimson red hair. Someone that he had thought he recognized from around the school, but he wasn't sure about her name. Though the more he thought about it perhaps it was just he knew the description. He was fairly certain that Violette may have described someone like this. However, the school was a large place and even the off times loud and extroverted student wasn't about to assume. The large student was prepared to just go about his own business, but as he walked up to one of the other training area there was a sign on it.
'Temporarily Out of Service'
"Damn..." He mumbled to himself as he looked over to the girl again. It appears they may have to share. Hopefully she wouldn't mind. Either way, Jim waited for Maria to finish before he spoke. "Hey, 94, not bad!" He said while approaching the training ring. "I uhh... hope you don't mind, but would it be alright if shared. The other area isn't working." A large and rather hopeful smile appeared on his face as he leaned up against the arena. It was then that he decided that maybe they could help each other out. "...or if ya wanted. Holograms are one this but having a friendly little spar against another person is even better." Most students were practically glued to their weapon, so it was nice to see someone else trying out some hand to hand combat. Something that he had intended to do today anyway.
Of course, just as Jim finished he realized that he hadn't even properly introduced himself. "Oh, sorry I'm Jim by the way!" He couldn't help but to chuckle at himself as he always seemed to forget to introduce himself until the last second.
The sudden compliment from the incoming student made Maria jumped a little. She didn't expect anyone would come here so early in the day, but above anything, she couldn't believe that she didn't hear anyone coming in from the entrance. The red-haired huntress trainee turned toward whoever had just enter, pausing the training simulation with the controller set on her wrist. The source of the voice came from a lumbering man, much bigger than her in both size and height. He must be at least six feet tall, his broad and muscular posture gave off a rather intimidating look. However, his face contrasted with his posture, suggested a much more friendly and approachable person. The mundane casual clothings tell Maria he’s just a student coming out for here training just like her, with his following statement confirmed that hypothesis. Maria returned his friendly smile with a gentle smile of her own. She could've sworn she saw his face somewhere, but brushed off the oea as she sometimes feel the same way toward many other students. The scarlette was just about to speak up when the boy suggested they should train together, a friendly spar between the two.
While sharing the same arena wasn't much of a big deal for her, Maria was slightly taken back when the boy, who introduced himself as Jim, suggested the that the two should have a friendly fight for training. It wasn't the first time she was asked something similar either. To the girl, it's rather odd to see others openly asks for a duel with people they barely even knew. Small skirmishes supervised by professors to teach students how to fight is one thing, but do people usually fight for fun in their free time? Maria was about to politely declined the offer and returned to her training. However, she hesitated. Jim looked like someone with a lot of experiences in combat. If she's trying to learn and practice a new fighting style she wasn't familiar with, perhaps having someone there to teach her a few tips and tricks would be more advised than just learning on her own.
“It's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Maria, Maria Ravenheart.” The scarlette introduced herself, giving Jim a quick nod before continued, accepting his offer. “I suppose a friendly sparring match wouldn't hurt. Just give me a quick moment to gather up things and we should be good.” As she speak, Maria fetched her scroll from the ground and turned off the simulation, the Beowolf hologram dissipated and vanished. The scarlette gave her newly met partner some time for him to get ready, going back to the benches on the outer rim of the arena to put her scrolls away, as well as making sure she's well hydrated. Once everything is settled, Maria returned to the fighting ground, standing in front of the massive student. At least from her perspective, it's similar to fighting with other grim monsters considering his sized and all. Maria only hoped that he won't squished her to a pancake with his size. “We can start whenever you're ready.”
"Nice to meet you as well..." The smile on his face shifted slightly, however as she mentioned her name, and with a snap of his fingers it suddenly hit him where he had heard/seen her. So, pointing in her direction the girl would most likely see the figurative light bulb go on over his head. "...oh Maria... I know you, or sorry... I know of you. Your teammates with Violette, she reached out to me for some advice not too long ago. It sounds like you all have quite the team." That whole experience with the horned Faunus was pretty interesting. He had been approached before about combat and fighting styles before. However, having someone ask him about leadership and tactics that was a new one. A rather flattering, that said with the acceptance of a friendly match Jim smiled as this was what he enjoyed most. A good work out, and maybe a chance to teach/learn something.
When Maria ask for a second Jim took the opportunity to halfheartedly stretch out while eyeing up his opponent. He of course held the size advantage, but he learned a long time ago that looks can be deceiving. After all his own partner, Ava, who was almost a foot shorter than him had put the hurt on him plenty of times.
The announcement that she was ready came shortly after, and Jim took the opportunity to crack his neck and knuckles. Which of course didn't do anything useful aside from maybe making him look tough, or well at least that's how it looked in his own mind. Regardless he looked over to the fiery haired girl and said. "Hell, ya lets have us some fun!" He practically glowed with excitement as this was the kind of thing he lived for. Of course, as he began to approach his opponent his intent was to give her a good show. He had no intention of involving his semblance or going all out...
~~~~ Present ~~~~

It had been a few weeks since his encounter with Maria. The girl had shown that despite not having the same experience level as him she was quite talented. So, as Jim entered the training arena again to find that she had only scored a 74. He was surprised. "A 74, c'mon you can do better than that!" His tone was not antagonizing or patronizing, but instead he said it in a way that would hopefully come off as encouraging because he knew what she was capable of. After all the pair now, hat been training together for a little while, and she seemed to be taking to his advice. "Remember, make sure you use everything you have. Hand to hand combat is more than just your hands and feet. Throw a shoulder, elbow, knee, hell even your head." Continuing to approach he made sure to add in one final positive comment. "You've got this! Don't worry I know you can get that 100%!"
